Fortitude

fortitude
\FOR-tuh-tood\ | noun

1 : strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage

The first link is something religious again. I guess fortitude is a cardinal virtue. Whatever.

The first picture is much more interesting.

When I went to see my apartment four years ago, I walked from where I had been working and then when I came to sign the lease and pay the deposit, I walked from the metro. I drove there for the first time on moving day. We had directions from my mother’s house from mapquest and I’m studying the printout and looking for signs to make sure we don’t get lost and make all the right turns. It’s not like I’m missing anything outside, it’s Arlington, VA, not exactly picturesque.

But then we turn this corner and I look up from the directions and what do we see but the Iwo Jima Memorial right in front of us, in the grassy area just to the left side of Route 50. It was really quite breathtaking (and for a non-patriotic person like me that’s saying something) and every time I drive home now I can’t help but look at it as we go past. It’s very impressive and just kind of moves you. Much more than the huge monstrosity of the World War II memorial on the mall ever could.
