Corvée

Posted on: June 11, 2008

corvée
\KOR-vay\ | noun

1 : unpaid labor (as toward constructing roads) due from a feudal vassal to his lord
2 : labor exacted in lieu of taxes by public authorities especially for highway construction or repair

This is a difficult word if you’re looking for a link that’s not a definition. I settled on a page on Gendercide Watch which defines it but also seems to provide four examples of death in association with forced labor.

The first picture is from a site written in French that’s about the Nazis and concentration camps.

It seems to be a site for the museum of deportation (if I’m translating correctly) and the picture is the second main drawing on the page. This topic and word are far too serious for my usual silly drivel so I’ll just let it speak for itself.
